Waste4Soil at Interpera Congress

The Waste4Soil was at Interpera (Internationa Pear Congress) on 26 -27 June in Òbidos, Portugal, organized by AREFLH and ANP (National Association of Pera Rocha Producers).

The Interpera congress brings producers and international stakeholders from the sector around technical and economic themes.

The conference was focused on consumption. As pear trends have evolved, reflecting changing consumer preferences for health, convenience, and sustainability, a presentation has been devoted to the best ways of communicating the value of pears.

The discussion has moved on to a second panel with the challenges facing the sector. Firstly, a European perspective has examined current policies and regulations with a focus on the consequences of climate change. Subsequent speakers will focus on water and soil. Participants have been introduced to a highly effective water treatment technology that restores salt-saturated soils and allows irrigation with salt water.

The importance of soil health has been illustrated by an explanation of the microbiome of the complex community of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microscopic life forms, that inhabit the soil environment.  They play a crucial role in the ecosystem.
