Discovering the Slovenia Istria Living Lab – Now available in Slovenian

The Slovenia Istria Living Lab, one of the Living Labs established within the Waste4Soil project, is now available in the Slovenian language, making its activities and innovative solutions more accessible to local communities and stakeholders.

Located in the Istria region of Slovenia, the Slovenia Istria Living Lab brings together researchers, industry partners, local farmers, and other relevant stakeholders to co-create solutions for transforming food processing residues into valuable soil improvers.

The Living Lab focuses on the valorisation of two main types of organic residues:

  • Olive oil processing residues
  • Mixed food waste anaerobic digestate from biogas plants

Through collaboration between the University of Ljubljana, the Science and Research Centre Koper (ZRS Koper), and KOTO, innovative soil improvers are being developed from olive pomace and food waste digestate. These solutions aim to contribute to a more circular food system by reducing waste while supporting soil health and sustainable agricultural practices.

As part of the Living Lab activities, field trials have been carried out to assess the performance of these innovative soil improvers on different crops, including:

  • Tomatoes
  • Potatoes
  • Cabbages
  • Lettuce
  • Olive trees

The Slovenia Istria Living Lab demonstrates the importance of collaboration between science, industry, farmers, and local communities in developing practical solutions for sustainable soil management. By transforming food processing residues into valuable resources, the Living Lab contributes to the transition towards a more circular and resilient agricultural system.

The Living Lab description is now available in Slovenian, strengthening engagement with local stakeholders and supporting knowledge exchange at regional level.
