Today, the Waste4Soil project joins the global celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity, highlighting the vital role biodiversity plays in building resilient ecosystems and sustainable agri-food systems.
Biodiversity goes far beyond the richness of plant and animal species. It encompasses the genetic diversity within crops and livestock, and the variety of ecosystems — from forests and wetlands to agricultural landscapes, that support complex interactions among microorganisms, flora, fauna, and people.
In soil, biodiversity is foundational. Microbial communities, fungi, insects, and earthworms all contribute to nutrient cycling, carbon storage, and plant health. Protecting this biodiversity is not only essential for food security, but also for climate resilience and ecological balance.
2025 Theme: Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development
This year’s theme invites us to reflect on how human activities can align more closely with nature, creating systems that regenerate, rather than deplete, our natural resources.
By restoring soil health and reducing waste, we contribute to a more nature-positive future, one where biodiversity thrives alongside sustainable development.
