The Waste4Soil Project was represented at the 10th Young Algaeneers Symposium (YAS), held from 26–29 May 2026 in Wageningen, the Netherlands, through the participation of our partner, the University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty.
The symposium brought together young scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs, and industry representatives working in the fields of microalgae and seaweed, providing a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and collaboration.
Showcasing research on sustainable microalgae cultivation
During the event, Tanja Zrnec Drobnjak presented a poster entitled:
“Optimization of digestate-based growth media for Desmodesmus sp. and Tetradesmus sp. and evaluation of microalgal biomass.”
The research was carried out within the framework of the Waste4Soil Project and the COMBIFARM Project and investigates the potential of digestate as a sustainable nutrient source for microalgae cultivation and biomass production.
By exploring innovative ways to valorise nutrient-rich by-products, the study contributes to the development of circular nutrient management strategies and resource-efficient bio-based solutions. The findings support the broader objectives of Waste4Soil, which aims to promote sustainable nutrient cycles and healthier soils through innovative approaches to organic waste valorisation.
Advancing innovation through collaboration
The Young Algaeneers Symposium offered participants the opportunity to explore the latest developments in microalgal biotechnology, sustainability, and circular bioeconomy solutions. Through scientific presentations, poster sessions, and networking activities, attendees exchanged ideas and discussed emerging challenges and opportunities within the algae sector.
For Waste4Soil, participation in events such as YAS is an important opportunity to share project results, connect with the wider research community, and strengthen collaboration across disciplines working towards more sustainable agricultural and environmental systems.
