From 14 to 17 October 2025, our partner IRTA (Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology) participated in the XV Latin American Workshop and Symposium on Anaerobic Digestion: Contributing to the Energy Transition and Decarbonization, held in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil.
During the event, Víctor Riau delivered a presentation entitled “Valorisation of Food Processing Residues by Bioelectrochemical Systems and Hydrophobic Membranes”, showcasing innovative research focused on transforming food industry residues into valuable bioresources. His contribution highlighted how bioelectrochemical technologies can play a key role in the circular bioeconomy and the sustainable management of organic waste streams.
The Symposium aimed to foster dialogue on new scientific advances, challenges, and technologies related to:
- Anaerobic treatment of solid and liquid waste
- Waste revalorisation and resource recovery
- Energy transition and CO₂ capture
- Methane and hydrogen production
- Nutrient and fine chemical recovery
- Water and sludge reuse
Emphasizing the circular economy, the event provided a platform for exchanging knowledge between academia, industry, policymakers, and civil society, encouraging collaboration for a more sustainable and resilient bioenergy future.
The audience included undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers, professionals, managers, politicians, industry representatives, NGOs, and international cooperation organizations working in fields such as anaerobic digestion, renewable energy, biomass, sanitation, solid waste, and resource efficiency.
By participating in this international symposium, IRTA contributed to strengthening Waste4Soil’s commitment to advancing innovative waste valorisation solutions that enhance soil health, resource recovery, and environmental sustainability.
